TERM 4

Term has started with a bang.

At the end of last week, we went to Waiora Scout Camp for 2 days. The year 3 children from Mrs P's class came to join in on the activities on Friday.

As a class we made some goals before we headed off to camp. I was very impressed at how seriously the children took this and I think these goals were spot on and definitely achieved!

Room 8 Camp Goals

Be grateful
Try new things
Try different foods
Get on with each other and work together
Manage myself and my belongings
Have a good sleep
Listen to other people
Have a positive attitude

Here are just a few photos to give you a taste of what we got up to.

                                                                         Day 1.

Organising our groups at the start of camp.

Heading off on our walk. Energy levels and excitement level were high.

The stream was a great place to have lunch, explore...

and catch some yabbies!

Building our shelters where we had our dinner.
Lots of discussion, listening to each other and working together needed.

Beginning of Day 2.

Archery was just one of the activities in our rotation. This was enjoyed by all.

End of a very enjoyable and successful camp.

Special End of Term Surprise

We were lucky enough to have Mabel and Greers's ponies to visit us.
For some of us, it was our first time on a pony. It was certainly a real treat.

Thank you Donya for bringing them to school.

Here are a few more shots of us over the term working together to solve some maths tasks.
We have to make sure we are all doing our part in our group.

In this one, we were working out how many students were year 3 and how many were year 4, from 4 teams.

Some serious thinkers here.

Everyone working together.

And here too.
During this activity, we had to read the question very carefully.  It was pretty tricky so we haven't finished it yet.
It helps if we follow the C.U.B.E.S . process of problem solving.

                                                 C - circle the numbers
                                                 U - underline the question
B - box the important words
E - evaluate (work out) which strategy is best
                                                 S - solve the problem

Making sure everyone is listening.

Kelly Sports

Each Monday of this term we have a session of PE with Sophie from Kelly Sports.
This day our focus was dodging.
At the end of this session, we played two different versions of dodgeball. We certainly got our hearts pumping!

As part of our science unit 'Kitchen Chemistry' we have been learning about the 3 states of matter.
Today we changed a liquid to a solid, by freezing and....

                                                       WE MADE ICE CREAM

We started to wonder what would happen if we used other liquids. Could we use flavoured milk and make flavoured ice cream? What would happen if we used orange juice? Some of us don't like milk, so could we use soy milk?
We decided to try it out..... and guess what??

                                                                 They were good!

Elgregoe the magician

Yesterday Elgregoe came to dazzle us with his skill.

We are still trying to work out how he does all these tricks?
He tapped the mirror to show us it was real.

Luke K was lucky enough to be part of the show!!

Elgregoe also had a very important message for us about how we can be good people and what to do if we find aren't happy with how people are treating us.

Extra for Experts

After seeing a pesky little mouse running around our class and up our walls, we decided that a good challenge would be to design a mouse trap. It was a fun challenge, but not successful as yet.......

Jacob explaining how his mouse trap works.

Charlie answering questions about his design.

Technology - building our own classroom.

We were very excited about our classroom being 'done up'. We thought this was a great time for us to think about what we would want if we could help with designing it.
We looked at the real plans then came up with our own.
Then, we had to make a model! How many of us will become designers or architects??

A rich mathematical task.

Today we worked in groups to order the glasses of orange juice and blackcurrant juice using instructions. We had to work together.
